Brazil competition authority targets soy exporters in probe

SAO PAULO, Aug 18 (Reuters) - A unit of Brazilian competition authority CADE has formally suggested a full-blown investigation into the signatories of Brazil's "Soy Moratorium Program," a voluntary initiative under which exporters agree not buy soy from farmers who cleared land in the Amazon rainforest after July of 2008.

According to a document signed by CADE's General Superintendent Alexandre Barreto de Souza on Monday and seen by Reuters, he has also determined the application of a "preventive measure" and the imposition of fines on the working group that coordinates the soy moratorium program and the soy exporting companies which are signatories.
