Furniture Stocks Retreat After Trump Threatens Tariffs on Imports

Shares of furniture retailers declined after President Trump warned of imposing tariffs on the industry's imports.

Wayfair led the decline and was down 7.8% at $71.75 in after-hours trading on Friday. Shares of RH retreated 6.7%, while Williams-Sonoma's stock lost 5.1%.

The stocks were down after Trump said Friday the U.S. would initiate a tariff investigation on furniture coming into the U.S. Trump said the investigation will be completed within the next 50 days, and when completed furniture imports will be tariffed at a yet-to-be-determined rate.

"This will bring the Furniture Business back to North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, and States all across the Union," Trump said in a post to Truth Social.

Furniture stocks have been in flux amid changing trade policies in recent months. Several companies had shifted their supply chains away from China to countries like Vietnam in an attempt to avoid tariffs on Chinese imports from Trump's first term.
