Landfill Closures Will Give Waste Management Pricing Power -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
2025/09/03

1419 ET - Landfill space is shrinking and Waste Management will be able to raise prices as a result, say JPMorgan analysts. About 10% to 15% of all active U.S. landfills are expected to close in the next 15 years while half of the disposal capacity from the Eastern seaboard will need to be moved in the next 10 years. Waste Management's landfill network is the largest of its competitors with a weighted-average remaining life 25+ years, according to the analysts. The company has also increased rail car and container capacity to ship waste from areas that will see landfill closures, allowing it to raise prices amid declining supply. (nicholas.miller@wsj.com)
