Thales Alenia Space, a joint company between Thales SA holding 67% and Leonardo holding 33%, is leading an innovative demonstration project for 5G direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity. This project, backed by the French Space Agency (CNES) under the France 2030 program, aims to enable voice calls and data transmission directly between a satellite and a mobile device without using a ground station. The initiative includes a 5G satellite payload with an active antenna, compatible with Release 17 of the 3GPP 5G standard, and involves a consortium of partners including Capgemini, Thales, Orange, SES, Qualcomm, and Loft Orbital. The project represents a significant advancement in telecommunications, focusing on high-speed connectivity even in remote areas, and underscores Thales Alenia Space's leadership in satellite 5G standardization and telecommunications.
