Discount Retailers Will Continue to Dominate Department Stores -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
09/08

1134 ET - Off-price retailers' 10-year run of dominance against department stores is not ending any time soon, UBS analysts say. Comparing the three main public discount retailers and the three main public department stores, the off-price stores had 67.1% of sales over the previous four quarters, a year-over-year increase of 200 basis points. Off-price's third-quarter sales are expected to grow 7% vs. a 6% decline for department stores. Off-price retailers will continue to gain market share and will benefit from advantageous inventory purchasing opportunities. The analysts reaffirm buy ratings for TJX and Burlington and sell ratings for Dillard's, Macy's and Kohl's. (nicholas.miller@wsj.com)
