Top Midday Stories: Nebius Signs Deal With Microsoft Worth Up to $19.4 Billion; Anglo American, Teck Resources to Merge

The Nasdaq Composite was down slightly in late-morning trading Tuesday, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average were up slightly, as reports that Israel conducted strikes on senior Hamas leadership in Qatar boosted energy stocks.

In company news, Nebius Group (NBIS) said late Monday it signed a commercial agreement with Microsoft (MSFT) under which it will provide the tech giant with access to dedicated graphics processing unit infrastructure capacity at its new data center in Vineland, New Jersey, over a five-year period. The total contract value is roughly $17.4 billion through 2031, subject to certain conditions, Nebius said in a regulatory filing. Microsoft may acquire additional services and/or capacity, which would increase the contract value to about $19.4 billion, according to the filing. Nebius shares were up more than 44% around midday.

Teck Resources (TECK) and Anglo American said Tuesday they have reached a deal to combine the two companies in a merger of equals under the name Anglo Teck. Under the terms of the deal, Anglo American will issue 1.3301 ordinary shares in exchange for each outstanding Teck share, the companies said. The Anglo American board also plans to declare a special dividend of $4.5 billion to be paid to its shareholders ahead of the deal's completion, subject to certain conditions, the companies said. Once the merger is completed, expected within 12 to 18 months, Anglo American and Teck shareholders will own about 62.4% and 37.6%, respectively, of the combined company. Teck Resources shares were up past 14%.

UnitedHealth Group (UNH) said Tuesday that interim data suggest that about 78% of its membership is in 4-star or higher plans, consistent with expectations and past performance. In an amended regulatory filing Tuesday, the company said management also intends to discuss preliminary Medicare Advantage star ratings for Star Year 2026/Payment Year 2027 when they meet with investors and analysts this week. UnitedHealth shares were up 7%.

EchoStar (SATS) received a letter on Monday from Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr notifying the company that he instructed his staff to terminate its investigation of the company's compliance with some of its federal obligations to provide 5G services in the US, the company said Tuesday in a regulatory filing. EchoStar shares were up nearly 2%.

Boeing (BA) delivered 57 aircraft in August, up from 40 a year earlier and the most August deliveries since 2018, the company said Tuesday. The 737 MAX led the way last month with 42 deliveries. Boeing shares were down 0.9%.

CoreWeave (CRWV) said Tuesday it has launched CoreWeave Ventures, a new initiative focused on supporting founders and companies developing artificial intelligence technologies. CoreWeave shares were up 4.9%.
