Top Midday Stories: Ellison Becomes World's Richest Person as Oracle Shares Soar; Vimeo to be Acquired by Bending Spoons for $1.38 Billion

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite were up around midday trading Wednesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down, as new inflation data showed that wholesale prices surprisingly fell in August.

In company news, Oracle (ORCL) reported fiscal Q1 non-GAAP earnings late Tuesday of $1.47 per diluted share, up from $1.39 a year earlier but below the FactSet consensus analyst estimate of $1.48. Fiscal Q1 revenue was $14.9 billion, up from $13.31 billion a year ago but below the FactSet consensus of $15 billion. Oracle cloud infrastructure revenue is expected to grow 77% to $18 billion this year and reach $144 billion at the end of a four-year period beginning in 2027, the company said. Oracle shares were up more than 41% around noon, making Oracle Founder, Chairman and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison the world's richest person, surpassing Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk, according to media reports.

Vimeo (VMEO) said Wednesday it has agreed to be acquired by Bending Spoons for $1.38 billion in cash. Vimeo shareholders will receive $7.85 per share in cash for each share of Vimeo stock they own, representing a 91% premium to Vimeo's 60-day volume-weighted average share price as of market close on Sept. 9, Vimeo said. The deal is expected to close in Q4. Vimeo shares were up nearly 61%.

Synopsys (SNPS) reported fiscal Q3 non-GAAP net income late Tuesday of $3.39 per diluted share, down from $3.43 a year earlier and below the FactSet consensus of $3.80. Fiscal Q3 revenue was $1.74 billion, up from $1.53 billion a year ago but below the FactSet consensus of $1.77 billion. For fiscal Q4, the company expects non-GAAP EPS of $2.76 to $2.80 on revenue of $2.23 billion to $2.26 billion. Analysts expect $4.50 EPS on $2.01 billion in revenue. For fiscal 2025, the company lowered its non-GAAP EPS guidance to a range of $12.76 to $12.80 from $15.11 to $15.19. Full-year revenue is expected to be $7.03 billion to $7.06 billion, up from its previous guidance of $6.75 billion to $6.81 billion. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect $15.13 EPS on $6.74 billion in revenue. Synopsys shares were down about 34%.

Amazon.com (AMZN) is looking to challenge Meta Platforms (META) as it develops a pair of augmented-reality glasses for consumers, The Information reported Wednesday, citing two sources familiar with the plans. Amazon shares were down 2.4%, while those of Meta were down 1.1%.

Nebius (NBIS) said Wednesday it has commenced an underwritten public offering of $1 billion of its class A ordinary shares. The company said it also plans to offer $2 billion of convertible senior notes in two series: $1 billion due in 2030 and $1 billion due in 2032. Nebius shares were down 1.2%.
