French energy major TotalEnergies said it was chosen alongside Germany's RWE to build and operate an offshore wind farm in France.

The project will represent an investment of around 4.5 billion euros ($5.32 billion) for the design, building and operation of the Centre Manche 2 site, marking the company's largest investment in France in 30 years, it said Wednesday.

When complete, the 1.5-gigawatt wind farm off the coast of Normandy will be the largest renewable energy project in France, providing electricity to more than 1 million households, it said.

However, TotalEnergies said RWE had expressed a desire to leave the consortium. TotalEnergies said it would still pursue the project, assuming all the commitments of the consortium, and would propose to bring a new partner into the project.

RWE didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Dow Jones Newswires.
