U.S. Steel said its board approved $300 million in capital spending, part of broader investments by parent Nippon Steel (TYO:5401), according to a company statement.

The company plans a $100 million slag recycler at its Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock, Pennsylvania, pending an air construction permit, and a $200 million upgrade to the Gary Works hot strip mill in Indiana to cut costs and expand premium steel output.

The projects aim to improve operational efficiency, reduce waste, and support higher-value products, forming part of Nippon Steel's wider modernization and infrastructure program across U.S. Steel facilities.
