U.S. Truck Tariffs Likely to Hit Demand -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
2025/09/26

1251 GMT - Truck customers are likely to wait and see how new U.S. tariffs influence pricing, so expect orders and demand to take a hit in the near term, Jefferies analysts write. If prices increase across the industry in response, demand will likely be ht in the fourth quarter and into 2026, they add. Trump plans to impose 25% tariffs on heavy-duty trucks, but it isn't known how vehicles with parts made in the U.S., or which are USMCA-compliant, will be treated. Jefferies estimates that Daimler Truck and Traton could be at a 300-600 basis point cost disadvantage to manufacturers that assemble most vehicles in the U.S., such as Volvo and Paccar. Daimler Truck shares fall 2.3%, Traton shares are down 2% while Volvo shares rise 3.4%. Paccar shares rise 6.7% pre-market. (dominic.chopping@wsj.com)
