Banco BPM Acquisition of Credit Agricole Italia Could Be Win-Win -- Market Talk

0926 GMT - A deal between Banco BPM and Credit Agricole Italia could be worth between 7 billion and 8 billion euros, Keefe, Bruyette & Woods says in a research note. BPM would buy the French bank's Italian retail arm in exchange for BPM shares, stakes in Agos and Anima, according to several press reports. "Such a deal could be win-win for both, but particularly for [BPM], where the [earnings per share] accretion could be double-digit," analysts write. A potential deal should try to keep the resulting Credit Agricole stakes in BPM and Anima below 30% to avoid triggering issues with the Italian government. Since the range of outcomes is wide, it could take months to get clarity on whether a transaction takes place, the analysts say. The market is already pricing an M&A premium into BPM's valuation, they add. (elena.vardon@wsj.com)
