BWX Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: BWXT) has announced it received a 10-year, $1.6 billion contract from the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration to establish a supply of high purity depleted uranium (HPDU) for national defense purposes. As part of the contract, BWXT will design, license, construct, and operate an HPDU manufacturing plant at its site in Jonesborough, Tennessee. The facility is expected to produce up to 300 metric tons of HPDU annually and create approximately 175 highly skilled jobs once fully operational. The plant will incorporate engineered environmental controls and solid waste management systems, with no additional liquid discharge into local waterways. Upon completion, the Jonesborough site will be the only active facility in the United States capable of producing HPDU for government needs.
