Australia Shares Poised to Rise -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
10/02

2302 GMT [Dow Jones]--Australian stocks are set to rise at the open, with ASX SPI200 futures up by 0.5% before the bell. The market will have tailwinds from Wall Street, where stocks extended recent gains. "Financial markets were largely unperturbed as the U.S. government entered a shutdown," Westpac senior economist Mantas Vanagas says in a note. Rather, sentiment has been buoyed by expectations of more Fed rate cuts this year. Australia's gold stocks are likely to get a boost from a continued rally in gold prices, which trade at a record high. Other minerals including copper, silver and iron ore are also higher, providing tailwinds for the resource-rich market, although oil prices are down. Ahead of trading, ARN Media named Chief Operating Officer Michael Stephenson as its next CEO, succeeding Ciaran Davis. (rhiannon.hoyle@wsj.com)
