Twist Bioscience Corporation has announced the publication of new scientific research in the journal Science, examining biosecurity screening practices in AI-assisted protein design. The peer-reviewed study, conducted in collaboration with Microsoft and other scientific and industry experts, found that AI-designed protein sequences, including variants of toxins and viral proteins, could evade detection by standard biosecurity screening software. While these findings were based on digital sequences and it remains unknown if such engineered proteins would be pathogenic if manufactured, the research prompted the development of improved detection protocols. Twist and its partners have already implemented updated screening strategies to better identify potentially harmful engineered protein sequences, reinforcing their commitment to safe and responsible scientific innovation. The results have been published and are now publicly available.
