South Korea's Nuclear Watchdog Carries Out Hydrogen Safety Analysis for Kori-2 Nuclear Reactor

South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) on Thursday said a hydrogen safety analysis for Kori Unit 2 divided the containment building into multiple virtual sections, following which Hanwha Solutions (KRX:009830) initially analyzed five sections.

The analysis was expanded to include 28 sections following a request from the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety.

There was no considerable change in results. The model used for Kori Unit 2 has proven reliability through several experiments and comparative studies and is also employed in the US Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plant.

The 650-megawatt lightwater reactor, operated by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KRX:015760) subsidiary Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power, has been offline since April 2023 after its initial 40-year license expired, according to a Yonhap News report.

Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power has requested the NSSC to operate the reactor until April 2033. The nuclear watchdog had initially reviewed the proposal on Sept. 25 but deferred its decision for further deliberation, the report said.

Shares of Korea Electric Power fell nearly 2% in recent trade, while those of Hanwha Solutions added 1%.
