Meta Platforms (META): The social-media company said it would "aggressively" raise spending to stay competitive in the artificial-intelligence arms race. That sent shares down more than 8.5% in premarket trading.

Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL): Rival Alphabet had investors cheering its own AI spending plans, which accompanied a surge in advertising and cloud-computing revenue.

Microsoft $(MSFT)$: The company's quarterly revenue exceeded forecasts and its Azure cloud business grew by about 40%. But Microsoft boosted AI-related spending and took a $3.1 billion charge from its investment in OpenAI. Shares fell 2.7% before the open.

Apple $(AAPL)$ and Amazon (AMZN) are due to post earnings after Thursday's market close.
