Market Chatter: US, China Suspend Ship Fees For One Year, In Boost For COSCO, Others

The U.S. and China have agreed to a one-year pause on the retaliatory fees they had placed on each other's ships, Reuters reported Friday.

The move, part of a broader trade deal that US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping reached in South Korea on Thursday, halts the $3.2 billion in annual fees on Chinese-built vessels and Chinese fees on U.S. ships, the report said.

This temporary truce aims to reduce high ocean freight costs that have reportedly disrupted vessel schedules for COSCO Shipping (HKG:1919, SHA:601919) and US-based Matson, according to the report.

Chinese shipyards account for 53% of all global ship orders based on tonnage in the first eight months of 2025, the report said, citing the Center for Strategic and International Studies' (CSIS) analysis of S&P Global data.
