President Trump said he will discuss last night's election results with Senate Republicans during a closed-door meeting at the White House on Wednesday morning, blaming the government shutdown for the GOP's poor performance and pushing lawmakers to eliminate the filibuster.

"I don't think it was good for Republicans. I don't think it was good-I'm not sure it was good for anybody," Trump said at the White House on Wednesday. "But we had an interesting evening, and we learned a lot, and we're going to talk about that."

He added, "I thought we'd have a discussion after the press leaves about what last night represented and what we should do about it, and also about the shutdown, how that relates to last night."

Trump said the shutdown was a "big factor" in Republican losses. He encouraged Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster in order to pass GOP-backed legislation and improve the party's standing heading into next year's midterms elections. "If you don't terminate the filibuster, you'll be in bad shape. We won't pass any legislation," Trump said.
