The policy chief of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party has indicated the party wants to tighten regulations on the construction of "mega solar" power facilities.

"The government must take responsibility and address this issue," said LDP Policy Research Council Chairperson Takayuki Kobayashi at a meeting at the party headquarters on Monday.

Several mega solar facilities have been built near Kushiroshitsugen National Park in Kushiro, Hokkaido, which has triggered calls for stricter regulations.

"Although there has been a tendency to leave things to local governments, who respond with ordinances and other measures, we must not impose an excessive burden" on them, Kobayashi said, suggesting the central government will take the lead on the issue.

"Some in the government and the ruling bloc have seen deregulation as necessary to promote renewable energy," he acknowledged, but added, "The important thing is to make sure regulations are appropriate."
