Exchange-Traded Funds Rise as US Equities Trade Mixed After Midday

Broad Market Indicators

Broad-market exchange-traded funds IWM and IVV edged higher. Actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) was down 0.3%.

US equity indexes were mixed in midday trading on Tuesday, led by declines in the technology and communication services sectors.

Energy

iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) each added about 1.6%.

Technology

Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) slipped 1%; iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) and iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) also declined.

SPDR S&P Semiconductor (XSD) was down 2%, and iShares Semiconductor (SOXX) shed 1.7%.

Financial

The Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF) rose 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) increased 1.8%, and its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), declined 1.9%.

Commodities

Crude oil was 1.5% higher, and the United States Oil Fund (USO) added 1.5%. Natural gas added 4%, and the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) gained 3.5%.

Gold on Comex fell fractionally, and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) gained 0.1%. Silver rose 0.7%, and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) was up 0.8%.

Consumer

Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP) rose 1.2%. The Vanguard Consumer Staples ETF (VDC) and iShares Dow Jones US Consumer Goods (IYK) were also higher.

Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) added 0.1%. VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) gained 0.5%, and SPDR S&P Retail (XRT) rose 1%.

Health Care

Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) was up 2%, and iShares US Healthcare (IYH) and Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) were higher; iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up 2.4%.

Industrial

Industrial Select Sector SPDR (XLI) added 0.1%. Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and iShares US Industrials (IYJ) were mixed, with the latter rising 0.1%.

Cryptocurrency

In midday activity, bitcoin (BTC-USD) was down 2.4%. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, ProShares Bitcoin ETF (BITO) slipped 2.5%, ProShares Ether ETF (EETH) fell 2.9%, and ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) shed 2.3%.
