J.M. Smucker's Consumers Are Paying More for Coffee, But Are Buying Less -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

0803 ET - J.M. Smucker sales got a boost from higher coffee prices, but consumers aren't buying as much for their morning brew. The company says an increase in comparable net sales in F2Q reflects an 11 percentage point increase from net price realization, primarily driven by higher coffee prices. But this was partly offset by a 6 percentage point decrease in sales volume, driven largely by lower demand for coffee. The company also saw softness in demand for peanut butter and dog snacks, as well as from the loss of contract manufacturing tied to its pet food brands divestiture. The company's U.S. retail coffee segment saw net sales rise by $144.9 million, or 21% as net price realization increased net sales by 27 percentage points. (adriano.marchese@wsj.com)
