Akamai Technologies has acquired Fermyon, a company specializing in serverless WebAssembly (Wasm) and function-as-a-service (FaaS) technology. The combination of Fermyon's cloud-native FaaS capabilities with Akamai's distributed platform is expected to simplify the deployment of AI and other functions at the edge, enabling enterprises to build edge-native applications with enhanced performance and lower costs. Fermyon's team, including its co-founders, will join Akamai's Cloud Technology Group, continuing their leadership in open-source serverless projects such as Spin and SpinKube. Akamai plans to integrate Fermyon's technology with its performance and security products, aiming to make it easier for developers to build, deploy, and secure edge applications. The company does not anticipate any material impact to its 2025 financial guidance as a result of this transaction.
