Fortescue (ASX:FMG) has commissioned a 250 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) at North Star Junction, using BYD's blade batteries to store daytime renewable energy and deliver 50 megawatts to its Pilbara Energy Connect network at night, according to a Monday statement from the company.
The installation forms part of a 4 to 5 gigawatt-hour rollout aimed at replacing fossil-fuel generation, improving grid stability, and cutting diesel and gas consumption, the company said.
The company is also advancing its 190 megawatt cloudbreak solar farm and has built more than 460 kilometers of transmission lines, with a new BESS scheduled for Eliwana in early 2026, the company added.
