Vodacom Group agreed to acquire a further stake in Kenyan mobile network operator Safaricom in a deal worth 36.0 billion South African Rand ($2.1 billion), taking its shareholding to 55%.

The South Africa-based telecommunications company on Thursday said it agreed to acquire a 15% stake in Safaricom from the government of Kenya, as well as a 5% stake from Vodafone. This increases the group's shareholding to 55% from 39.93%.

The deal values Safaricom shares at 34 Kenyan shilling ($0.26) each and will result in the consolidation of the operator, Vodacom said.

The transaction will accelerate Vodacom's growth journey and strengthens its position as a market leader, while unlocking new opportunities, Chief Executive Shameel Joosub said.
