Nikon Corp. will open a facility at its Sagamihara Plant in Sagamihara, Kanagawa prefecture, on Wednesday, to serve as a base for development of flexible electronics technology, which makes it possible for electronic devices to bend or stretch.

According to the company's announcement on Friday, the facility is equipped with the machinery needed to develop products such as prototypes of next-generation perovskite solar cells and sensors. It is intended for use by startups and other groups lacking their own development centers.

The facility's equipment includes Nikon's newly developed lithography system, which external companies, universities and other parties in this field can pay to use. The latest system can apply extremely fine circuits to the surface of roll stock film or precisely etch patterns on materials that are prone to warping or shrinking due to heat. The system capitalizes on Nikon's expertise in lithography systems for semiconductor and liquid crystal manufacturing.

Markets related to flexible electronics are expected to grow. Nikon, aiming also to sell its new lithography system and other products, plans to provide comprehensive support for operations at the new facility, from prototype manufacturing to developing technology for mass production.
