Mercedes-Benz Group is partnering with Chinese autonomous-driving company Momenta to offer robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi, joining a wave of Chinese robotaxi companies' expansion to the Middle East.

The companies said Tuesday that Mercedes-Benz is working with Momenta and United Arab Emirates taxi company Lumo to introduce luxury robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi. The fleet will start formal operations in the city next year, using new Mercedes-Benz S-Class cars.

The move comes as Chinese robotaxi companies have been expanding overseas, especially in the Middle East, where regulations have been more welcoming of the new technology.

Momenta sells its autonomous driving assistance solutions to automakers. It has also worked with Uber in Munich on a driverless robotaxi project, with testing expected to begin next year.

Meanwhile, other robotaxi companies such as Pony AI and WeRide operate their own robotaxi fleet with autonomous-driving technology.

Chinese robotaxi companies are set to scale up their fleet size next year. Major players Pony AI, Baidu and WeRide all have plans to roll out large-scale services in big Chinese cities and abroad.
