FedEx said it incurred $25 million in additional costs in November after last month's UPS cargo plane crash led to the grounding of all MD-11 planes, including FedEx's fleet. FedEx expects even higher costs in December, during peak parcel season, as it relies more on trucks and third-party carriers to compensate, executives said.

"It's an expensive time of the year to have outsourced lift," said FedEx chief financial officer John Dietrich during the company's earnings call. He added that FedEx expects the MD-11s to return to service in its fiscal fourth quarter, the March-to-May 2026 period.

FedEx owns 34 MD-11 planes, and 25 of them were operational when the FAA issued a safety directive following the Nov. 4 crash, prohibiting further flights until all the aircraft are inspected.
