Portland General Electric Company (PGE) and The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs are undertaking a major infrastructure upgrade at the Round Butte Hydroelectric Facility near Madras, Oregon. The project involves replacing the original turbine shut off valves, which have been in use since the facility was built in 1964. The new valves, each weighing 140 tons and spanning 15 feet in width, are expected to support the safe and efficient operation of the plant for another 60 years. The $55 million project began in 2019, with the first valve installed in November and completion scheduled for February 2026. The upgrade is part of PGE's commitment to reliable, clean power generation and will help maintain the facility's ability to provide carbon-free electricity to over 150,000 homes.
