A group of automakers will begin displaying clearer and more comprehensive information on the performance of their electric vehicles after Italian regulators closed an investigation over suspected unfair commercial practices.

The Italian Competition Authority launched probes into BYD, Stellantis, Tesla and Volkswagen earlier this year to examine information the companies provided to consumers on EV driving range, battery capacity degradation and limitations on standard battery warranties.

The regulator had suggested that the carmakers' websites displayed generic and sometimes contradictory information regarding the driving range of their EVs, without clarifying which factors impact the advertised maximum range and the extent to which they affect the actual range.

It also said the websites failed to provide consumers with clear and complete information on battery capacity degradation resulting from normal vehicle use, and on the terms and limitations of the standard battery warranty.

In closing its investigations Friday, the authority said the four companies will review and redesign their websites to present clear and comprehensive information, in a single dedicated section.

They will display the real-word driving range of electric vehicles, the factors impacting such range, battery capacity degradation, as well as the terms and limitations applied to standard battery warranties.

"Consumers will therefore have immediate access to information regarding the main features of electric vehicles," the authority said.

In addition, the companies will also add an EV range simulator to their websites, allowing consumers to view the effect of different variables on driving range, compare vehicles, and see the main factors influencing the real-world driving range of EVs and battery capacity degradation.

The websites will also display clear and detailed information on battery health levels for warranty purposes and on the terms and limitations applied to such warranties.

The companies are required to implement all commitments within 120 days.

BYD, Stellantis, Tesla and Volkswagen didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
