Honda Motor's (TYO:7267) U.S. unit has unveiled a prototype towable camper trailer designed to be pulled by compact sport utility vehicles, including the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, as the automaker looks to tap growing interest in road trips and outdoor travel, according to a Wednesday statement by the company.

Honda did not give details on production plans, pricing or a launch schedule.

The trailer, called Base Station, was developed by Honda's U.S.-based research and development teams in California and Ohio. Honda said the lightweight design allows it to be towed by a wide range of vehicles, including electric models, without the need for a full-size pickup or recreational vehicle.

The compact trailer can sleep up to four people and includes features such as a convertible sofa bed, optional bunk bed, air conditioning, and kitchen equipment.

It is powered by a lithium battery and can also be connected to external power sources.
