Daimler Truck Holding's Japan unit and Foxconn Technology Group agreed to set up a bus company in the second half of this year, to develop and sell electric buses in Japan and abroad.

The Daimler Truck unit, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus, and Foxconn said the new company will combine Fuso's expertise in design, development and manufacturing of buses with Foxconn's zero-emission vehicle technology and global network.

Fuso Bus head Katsuto Kora will be the chief executive of the new company, which will be based in Kawasaki, Japan, the companies said Thursday.

"This collaboration will combine the strengths of both parties to accelerate our transformation in the bus sector," said Mitsubishi Fuso Chief Executive Karl Deppen.

The two companies said they will cooperate on the sale of electric buses, beginning with models developed by Foxtron Vehicle Technologies, a unit of Foxconn. The buses will be developed and manufactured at Mitsubishi Fuso's plant in Toyama, Japan. The new bus maker will also aim to improve the diesel lineup.

The establishment of the new company is subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals, the companies said.

Mitsubishi Fuso and Foxconn in August announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to explore a strategic collaboration on electric buses.

Mitsubishi Fuso sells trucks, buses and industrial engines globally under the Fuso brand, which has more than 90 years of history. Daimler Truck holds about 89% of its shares, while Mitsubishi group companies own the remainder.

Foxconn, best known for assembling Apple's iPhones, has been diversifying its business lines, growing its footprint in areas like artificial-intelligence servers and electric vehicles in recent years.
