Meta Platforms' (META) Instagram, Snap's (SNAP) Snapchat, as well as TikTok, and other social media platforms could be impacted by a move of Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to ban their use by minors under 16 years of age, the executive said during the World Governments Summit in Dubai on Tuesday.

The platforms will need to implement effective age verification systems that are "not just checkboxes," Sanchez said.

"If we want to protect our children there is only one thing we can do: take back control," Sanchez said in an X post on the same day.

Meta, Snap, and TikTok did not immediately reply to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
