The pressure is on to find the perfect Valentine's Day gift. What that is, exactly, will be different depending on where you are in your relationship. Are you one date in? Do you share a toothbrush holder? Have you been married for decades? Each stage comes with its own rules, and nothing ruins the mood faster than a gift that's too earnest too soon, or so generic it could have been purchased for anyone with a pulse.

Here, a guide to getting it right.

First Date

If your first date is on Valentine's Day, which is brave already, you may feel compelled to show up with something in hand. A gift at this stage should say, I have a sense of humor and no expectations. Think small, perishable, and plausibly ironic like a single excellent chocolate bar, a slim paperback with a clever premise, or a novelty that suggests taste rather than effort.

Three Dates In

Whether you're 29 or 68, three dates means you've cleared the basic hurdles: conversation flows, attraction is mutual, and neither of you has abruptly "gotten busy" for two weeks. At this stage, the best gifts demonstrate listening but not surveillance. They mentioned loving a certain condiment? A niche hot sauce. Do they drink coffee obsessively? A well-designed mug or a bag of good beans.

Seeing Each Other a Few Times a Week

You have a cadence. You know each other's schedules. You've left something at their apartment on purpose. It's time for an experience-based gift, to jazz up your routine. Think: tickets, reservations, anything that creates a future plan. The production company A24 made special movie chocolate that comes in flavors like fizzy fountain soda and will pair nicely with tickets.

You've Defined the Relationship

You're in a relationship, but there's no ring or shared lease. The right gift here is something that feels personal but not permanent. Think of something for their home that doesn't claim space in yours, like a beautiful print, a sculptural objet d'art, or a framed matchbook from a favorite bar or restaurant.

Moving In Together

At this point, you've seen each other sick, stressed and assembling furniture. Living together is still new, so every practical present for your shared home feels special. Gifts here should improve daily life: nicer linens, a staycation, or an upgraded alarm clock to make hitting snooze more pleasant. Thoughtful practicality is its own form of intimacy.

Till Death Do Us Part

Why not put the spark back in your relationship by going just a little bit over the top? Resist the urge to buy a super practical gift, like a laptop, and instead buy luxury luggage, which hints at future adventures.
