Market Chatter: Sony Targets AI Music Attribution With New Detection Tool

Sony Group (TYO:6758) has developed technology that can trace which songs were used to train and generate AI-created music, a step it says could allow songwriters to claim compensation from AI developers, Nikkei reported Monday.

The system estimates how much each original work contributes to an AI-generated track, either by accessing cooperating developers' base models or by comparing generated music with existing songs when direct access is unavailable, according to the report.

Sony says the approach could underpin revenue-sharing arrangements for AI music, as disputes mount over the use of copyrighted material in AI training. In Japan, such attribution could apply across both creator copyrights and performers' neighboring rights, the report said.

The technology was developed by Sony AI and may be extended to video, games and characters, according to the report.
