Yomiuri: Development Bank of Japan, 8 Private Railways to Launch Joint Solar Power Plant Project

The Development Bank of Japan Inc. (DBJ) and eight private railway groups announced on Monday that they will launch a joint project to partly switch to electric power generated by solar for railway operations. They will procure the electricity from a large-scale solar power plant, or mega solar, to be constructed in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture.

Odakyu Electric Railway Co., Keio Corp., Keisei Electric Railway Co., Keikyu Corp., Seibu Railway Co., Tokyu Railways Co., Tobu Railway Co. and Sotetsu Clean Energy Co. are participating in the project alongside the DBJ. The DBJ and the eight companies will jointly invest in RD Solar Power, a new Tokyo-based electric power company, and purchase electricity from the mega solar RD plans to build in Rokkasho.

The construction of the mega solar will cost approximately 6 billion yen and be mainly funded by investments from the participating companies. With a capacity of 21.75 megawatts, the plant is expected to cover several percentages of the electricity needed for the companies' railway operations. Power generation is scheduled to begin in February 2029.

Yoshiyuki Takada, a DBJ managing executive officer, stated, "This project will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions for the railway companies and to regional development," at a press conference in Tokyo on Monday.
