The Case to Revive TC Energy's Line 2 Into Eastern Canada -- Market Talk

Dow Jones
03/03

0723 ET - National Bank Capital Markets makes the case to bring TC Energy's Mainline Line 2 back into play, restoring a natural gas pipeline to Ontario and Quebec. The company is currently evaluating market support and technical feasibility for an expansion of its about 6 billion cubic feet a day Mainline into Eastern Canadian markets. National Bank analysts note Line 2 has been inactive since 2013, representing an opportunity to bring it back into service for a relatively modest capital investment, including additional compression and/or looping through Ontario, adding 0.8 billion-plus a day of capacity. This natural gas supply would be enough to support the buildout of about 5 gigawatts of new combined cycle power generation capacity, 20% of Ontario's peak demand, they say. It also fits with Ottawa's defense industrial strategy, and would build a stronger east-west energy corridor. (robb.stewart@wsj.com)
