The State Department closed the U.S. embassy in Kuwait on Thursday, after suspending operations on Tuesday and previously advising Americans in Kuwait to shelter in place.

The embassy on Thursday urged U.S. citizens to leave the country if possible to do so safely. Kuwait's airspace remains closed, but officials urged citizens to consider the land route through the open border with Saudi Arabia.

American diplomatic facilities are a target in the conflict with Iran, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this week. The department has also drawn down non-emergency staff at several facilities including those in the U.A.E., Qatar, Iraq, Jordan and Bahrain. Also on Tuesday, the department similarly suspended operations at embassies in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon after retaliatory strikes by Iran.

No injuries to U.S. personnel at embassies have been reported, according to a release from the Kuwait facility on Thursday.
