Reza Pahlavi, the exiled son of Iran's last monarch, advised his supporters in Iran to stay in their homes-and not protest-for the time being. "For the sake of your own security, leave the streets and stay in your homes," said Pahlavi, whose father, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was deposed as shah in the 1979 revolution that established the Islamic Republic.

In his social-media appeal, Pahlavi asked his followers to show their defiance in other ways, such as by chanting at night. Pahlavi supported large protests in January. The Iranian government responded to those mass protests with lethal force, killing thousands.
