Demand for Discount Retailers Is Growing -- Market Talk

Dow Jones

1317 ET - Both Dollar General and Dollar Tree are maintaining positive same-store visit trends as they expand footprints, according to a recent report from Placer.ai. The firm says the trend points to expanding category demand, rather than zero-sum competition. Dollar General is now a staple grocery destination for many households, Placer.ai says, citing data that shows the company logged mid- to high-single-digit same-store traffic gains between September and January. "Meanwhile, Dollar Tree, which added more than 300 stores over the past year, maintained flat to modestly positive same-store traffic trends," Placer.ai says. "As price-conscious consumers prioritize value, overall demand for dollar stores appears to be expanding rather than simply shifting between banners." Dollar General is slated to report 4Q results Thursday, and Dollar Tree is expected to issue quarterly results March 16. (connor.hart@wsj.com)
