Two Indian-flagged tankers have passed safely through the Strait of Hormuz and are set to arrive in India, a senior Indian shipping official said, a rare crossing of the waterway that has become a gauntlet for global shipping. One of the vessels, the Shivalik, will reach the Indian coast on Monday, Rajesh Kumar Sinha said, while the Nanda Devi, will berth early the next day. The tankers, both carrying LPG, crossed the strait early on Saturday, he said. "Indian Navy ships did not escort the vessels through Hormuz, a person familiar with the matter said."

The safe passage of the tankers followed a phone call last week between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for the first time since the war began, and after India helped repatriate more than 140 Iranian nationals on a charter flight arranged by Iran. They included mostly the non-essential crew of the Iranian ship IRIS Lavan, some tourists and a handful of diplomats.
