ByteDance is building artificial intelligence servers using Nvidia Blackwell chips outside China to boost its computing power, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The TikTok owner teamed up with Southeast Asian company Aolani Cloud to build servers using 500 Nvidia Blackwell computing systems with around 36,000 B200 chips in Malaysia, according to the report, citing the sources.

ByteDance's use of the powerful chips comes as the U.S. barred Nvidia from selling its most advanced hardware to Chinese users, the report said.

The company will use the computing power to fuel AI research and development outside China and keep up with increasing demand for AI globally, the report said.
