Isuzu Motors Ltd. and Tokyo-based startup Tier IV Inc. have announced that they will utilize Nvidia Corp.'s artificial intelligence technology for the deployment of autonomous buses.

The collaboration aims to train AI with driving data to allow autonomous buses to evaluate their surrounding environments on their own, rather than with humans.

Using Tier IV's software, Isuzu has been conducting demonstration tests toward commercializing Level 4 autonomous driving technology, where a human driver is not needed under certain conditions, by the end of fiscal 2027. However, during the tests human intervention was required. By utilizing Nvidia's AI, Isuzu aims to realize fully driverless operations.

The partnership with Tier IV and Nvidia "represents a significant leap in commercial vehicle intelligence," an Isuzu executive said in a statement, when the announcement was made on Tuesday.

There is a growing trend among Japanese automakers of strengthening partnerships with Nvidia on autonomous driving technology, as seen by Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co. having moved to adopt the U.S. semiconductor giant's technology.
