Saudi Arabia's de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is among the most powerful figures in the Middle East and a close ally of President Trump. The 40-year-old known as MBS pursued degrees of social and economic openness previously unseen in the kingdom.

He is a son of 90-year-old King Salman, who these days makes few public appearances. The appointment of MBS as heir apparent upended the Saudi line of succession. As crown prince, MBS supported publicly listing a sliver of the state oil company Aramco and is backing a transformative construction project known as Neom. Since Trump's return to the White House, MBS has pledged huge Saudi investments in the U.S. and has supported Saudi investment with Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.
