Shares of Staar Surgical surged after the company said it expects sales to more than double in the first quarter, despite negative impacts from the war in Iran.

Shares were up 19% to $24.85 in after-hours trading Wednesday. The stock closed down 1% at $20.88, and is down 9.6% year-to-date.

The implantable lens maker on Wednesday said it expects first-quarter sales of more than $90 million, compared to $42.6 million a year earlier.

The war in Iran negatively impacted net sales in the Middle East, as well as in certain parts of the Europe, Middle East, and Africa and the Asia-Pacific regions, the company said. Staar Surgical continues to monitor the situation, cautioning that the conflict, if it continues, could keep impacting sales growth.

"Current global business conditions are volatile and some portions of our business remain unpredictable," Chief Financial Officer and Interim Co-Chief Executive Deborah Andrews said. "We continue to provide no forward revenue or earnings guidance and look forward to reporting our full first quarter financial results and filing our 10-Q in early May."

Staar Surgical said the majority of the increase in sales came from China, its largest market.

Sales also rose by double digits in the Americas.

"Our higher net sales, combined with our significantly improved cost structure, are expected to drive a meaningful improvement in adjusted EBITDA for the first quarter," Andrews said.
