SYDNEY--The Australian government has secured the delivery of an extra 200 million liters of diesel fuel from international suppliers, with work commencing with fertilizer companies to secure more supply ahead of plantings by farmers.

The government has partnered with BP Australia and Viva Energy, taking the total additional diesel secured in the last seven days to approximately 300 million liters, or over 1.8 million additional barrels, to keep Australia moving, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement Wednesday.

The announcement comes as Australia works to shore up energy supply amid the ongoing Middle East crisis, with gasoline prices across the country sharply higher since geopolitical tensions began in late February.

Work continues with Ampol, Park Fuels, IOR and other fuel suppliers, to secure additional fuel shipments in coming days and weeks, Albanese said, adding that the government is also working with leading fertilizer companies Incitec Pivot and CSBP to support farmers.

"As conflict in the Middle East and global volatility continues, we are working to shield Australians from the worst of the impacts," Albanese said.
