Canadian Telecom Rates Shouldn't Alter Fiber Pricing Strategies -- Market Talk

1242 ET - Canada's telecom regulator's new rates for wholesale fibre remain largely unchanged this year and shouldn't alter pricing strategies. Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission issued new rates that determine what smaller internet providers must pay to access the fiber networks of major incumbents such as Rogers or Bell. Because the final rates are "largely unchanged from the 2024 interim rates," they don't materially affect the economics for major telecoms, says TD Cowen's Vince Valentini. He notes that at current rates, the wholesale levels leave "minimal room for profit for fibre resellers," which limits the likelihood of aggressive discounting and helps preserve the current competitive balance. The CRTC still has to finalize rates for Atlantic Canada and Manitoba, leaving those regions awaiting further clarity. (adriano.marchese@wsj.com)
