Shell's Norco, La., Refinery Extinguishes Overnight Fire at Processing Unit -- OPIS

Shell said Tuesday morning that it has put out an overnight fire that broke out at one of the processing units at its 250,000 b/d Norco refinery in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana.

In a 9 a.m. CT update on its Facebook page, the oil major said Norco refinery personnel and parish emergency responders successfully extinguished the onsite fire, adding that there were no injuries reported.

While the fire is out, monitoring and response activities will continue until the incident is fully resolved and an all-clear is confirmed, Shell said.

The U.K.-based company also said its air monitors as well as those from independent third-party providers confirmed that no elevated levels of contaminants were detected during the incident.

Shell, however, didn't identify which processing unit was affected in the update.

A Shell representative didn't respond to a request for comment and possible production impacts at the time of publication.

In a Monday night Facebook post, Shell said the Norco refinery had experienced an upset at one of its units, requiring the facility to "shut it down to make necessary repairs." At that time, the company added there would be heavy flaring and smoking.

Shell Norco, which has an oil refinery and chemical plant, produces gasoline, jet fuel, ULSD as well as ethylene, propylene and other building-block components to make plastics and other everyday products.
