Bausch Health reported a $1.43 billion goodwill impairment charge related to Salix's RED-C program in its most recent quarter, widening the company's loss.

The Canadian pharmaceutical company on Wednesday recorded a loss of $1.42 billion, or $3.82 a share, compared with a loss of $58 million, or 16 cents a share, a year earlier. The loss was driven by the impairment charge, partially offset by a higher gross profit.

Stripping out certain one-time items, including the charge, the company reported adjusted earnings of 78 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting 67 cents a share.

Revenue rose to $2.52 billion, up from $2.26 billion a year prior. Analysts were expecting $2.41 billion in revenue.

Shares rose 3.4%, to $5.78, in after-hours trading, after closing down 1.4% at $5.59. Ahead of the close, the stock was down more than 20% year to date.

The company reaffirmed its full-year outlook for revenue between $10.67 billion and $10.92 billion, with adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization between $3.89 billion and $4.01 billion.
