Cinemark Shares Fall Despite Higher 1Q Revenue

Shares of Cinemark fell despite an uptick in revenue and shrinking losses and debt during the first quarter.

The stock fell 6.4% on Friday to $27.62. Shares are still up 19% year to date.

While attendance ticked upward and concession and ticket sales drove up the company's top line, executives could not pinpoint when the film industry would return to its standardized 45-day exclusive theatrical window, referring to the time between a movie's theater release and its availability for streaming at home. A shortened window emerged during the pandemic and has created headwinds for theaters ever since.

But some analysts believe the selloff was an overreaction. Several potential blockbuster films releasing later this year, including "Disclosure Day" and "Supergirl," could juice box office sales, Wells Fargo analysts say.

Shares for AMC also ticked down 4.6%, to $1.45, after Cinemark reported results.

Cinemark on Friday posted a loss of $6.4 million, or 6 cents a share, compared with a loss of $38.9 million, or 32 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts polled by FactSet expected a loss of 9 cents a share.

Revenue rose to $643.1 million from $540.7 million a year earlier. Analysts expected revenue of $632.7 million.

Total attendance for U.S. and international locations was 39 million, up from 36.6 million a year earlier.
