Newell Brands reported lower first-quarter sales but raised its full-year sales outlook on expectations that its turnaround strategy will soon drive a return to topline growth.

The company posted a loss of $33 million, or 8 cents a share, compared with a loss of $37 million, or 9 cents a share the year prior.

On an adjusted basis, the company recorded a loss of 5 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected a loss of 9 cents a share.

Net sales fell 1.1% to $1.55 billion. Wall Street expected $1.51 billion.

The company raised its full-year sales growth outlook to flat to up 2%, up from its previous forecast of down 1% to up 1%. It also guided for full-year adjusted earnings of 56 cents to 60 cents a share, compared with its prior outlook of 54 cents to 60 cents a share.

For the second quarter it expects net sales to be flat to up 2% and adjusted earnings to be between 16 cents and 19 cents a share.

Analysts see adjusted earnings of 25 cents a share for the second quarter and 56 cents a share for the full year.

"Higher than expected consumer demand for our products, as evidenced by improving point of sale and share trends, was driven by continued investment in innovation, advertising and promotional support," said Chief Executive Chris Peterson. "We also experienced better than expected underlying category dynamics despite the continued existence of a challenging macroeconomic backdrop."
